Iowa’s open records law on body camera footage murky, expert says

A panel discussion was hosted by The Des Moines Register and the Iowa Newspaper Association to discuss Iowa’s open record laws and how they will affect police body camera footage. The laws in place are too broad and not specific enough on what is to be done with the footage. The democratic senator from Waterloo Danielson would like to see action taken by the state but relays that it is not likely. There has been pressure on both sides, some warranting a cautious approach to get a feel for the new tools before making any decisions. Without clarification some fear that many cases will end up in court, which will leave judgment on these laws up to a judge each time.
