Apartments Downtown appeals class action suit

The largest property management company in Iowa City, Apartments Downtown, has filed an appeal with the Iowa Supreme Court asking for a reversal of a July district court ruling that deemed lease provisions used by the landlord illegal and approved a class-action suit filed by former tenants. A district court judge agreed with the former tenants that there were illegal fines in the leases and the landlord illegally withheld large portions of security deposits. This likely will push back the Nov. 3 trial date that was set to determine damages. It was said that there were at least 6,000 tenants from 2010 to 2014 that rented from Apartments Downtown with their allegedly illegal provisions. This case could result in millions of dollars being reimbursed.
